Top 5 Moments of 2017

This was a wild year. From Yvonne Orji doing a Christian version of “For the D Challenge” to P-Square officially breaking up, 2017 was either a hot mess or just entertaining, depending how you look at it. Here are our picks of the top moments of 2017.

5. Bobrisky

The enigma that is Bobrisky exploded into super stardom this year and hasn’t looked back. Bobby has made money moves like none other, going on tour, making numerous club appearances all over the U.S., creating a premium snapchat requiring fans to pay 10K(in Naira), to even being featured on a chorus of “Barbie“, which surprisingly made the song a lot better. We actually got to sit with the barb himself and interview him about his life so far. He garnered so many fans this year and propelled a conversation about homophobia in Nigeria. Many people like him, but even more people hate him, but either way, its hard to ignore him. Only one question remains – what will he do in 2018? Osheyyy….Barddest.

4. The Obu Family on Family Feud

On February 27th we posted this video of the Obu Family on Family Feud with Steve Harvey. 2 days later, it has amassed over 13,000 retweets and counting. Their presence on the game show really couldn’t get anymore Nigerian than that. Pure comedy, you have to watch it to understand. We actually came in contact with the family and asked them a few questions about their viral clip, which you can read here

3. Wizkid’s International Accomplishments

While it’s not necessarily a “moment”, watching Wizkid gain international stardom like never before has been motivating to watch. With the success of “One Dance” by Drake and “Come Closer” featuring Drake, it was only a matter of time until Wizkid officially pops as a superstar – at an international level. This year he became the first afrobeats artist to win a billboard award (for his contribution to One Dance). Some people may brush this off or try to discredit him but this is a great accomplishment for anybody with humble beginnings. He has won more awards than any other African artist in 2017, including 1 ASCAP, 3 BBMAs, 2 iHeart Radio Awards, 1 Echo, 1 BET, 1 MOBO, a Grammy & Soul Train nod, and also having album placements on Tinie Tempah, Zara Larsson, Wale, and Jeezy’s albums, and not to mention selling our Royal Albert Hall. Say what you say about Wizkid but the stats don’t lie, congrats on a great 2017!

2. Davido vs Wizkid Battle Royale (featuring Tekno)

Wizkid and Davido are arguably afrobeats’ biggest stars today, and have had an amazing year musically. They’ve had bumps with each other in the past, throwing subtle jabs, but this year was something serious. I’m not too certain where it started this year, but there was some name calling by Wizzy proclaiming that Tekno, had in fact a duckface. While many ducks were offended by this slander, it was indeed funny.

The shade was initially thrown because Tekno put up a series of tweets, hinting that Wizkid is only big internationally (and losing it in Africa). Not only that by, Davido, who was on fire at the time, was aiming to be the new “king”. Tekno would soon apologize and offer to produce a track for Wiz.

Somewhere along the lines, Davido re-inserted himself and aligns himself with Tekno (as let’s be honest, “IF”, is majorly credited to Tekno). Wizkid and Tekno make up and release a collaboration “Mama” Fast forward to the OneAfricaMusicFest in Dubai, there was a viral footage of an alleged fight between Davido’s team & Wizkid’s at some point during the night. Shortly afterwards, both teams denied being involved, rumors started circulating around Sarkodie instigating, but one thing was certain amongst most of the stories…Wizkid was slapped. According to NaijaLoaded, Tekno extended his hands to shake Sunday Are’s hand (Wiz’s manager) and Sunday punched Tekno’s phone saying he doesn’t have respect. Maybe he should have prostrated? Davido’s team caught wind of this incident, and pulled up to Wizkid’s team (I imagine in a western movie shootout showdown) and all hell breaks loose. However the story does not end there, Davido put up a backing up Tekno and saying he will protect him, implying that maybe Tekno may have been touched a bit more aggressively than we have been led to believe.

Can’t we all just get along?

1. Mans Not Hot

After taking the internet by storm with his BBC 1Extra freestyle  Michael Dapaah aka Big Shaq became a household name this year. The clever comedian gave us one of the funniest moments in recent history with a hilarious freestyle that took “viral” to the next level. The song has over 42 million streams on Spotify and the music video acquired 1 million views in 24 hours, and now has over 108 million! His hit landed him in many different places like the BET Hip Hop Awards, Genius, and giving an entertaining interview with Ebro in the Morning. The best thing about this, is that it’s genuine. His comedy does not seem forced or corny, but he’s just being himself. One fan even went so hard and got a tattoo of his illustrious lyrics on his body.

We’re excited to see what Big Shaq has for us in 2018, but even more eager to see which one of YOU will be great next year!
