Freaky Friday: Music Edition

It’s Fridayyyyy and some of your favorite artists are doing what they do best to get us right for the weekend. We got new drops from Chief Obi, Tiwa Savage, Idowest, Davido, Wizkid and…a Ciara x Tekno Collaboration (How Sway??).

Start your turnup below!

Idowest ft Davido – “Ji Masun”

Recent OBO signee, Idowest releases the video for his new single, “Ji Masun” featuring Davido. Idowest is a great rapper who does the beat justice and Davido’s voice makes for a catchy hook but if I’m being honest, the spirit of Shaku Shaku is a little forced in the video sha.

Santi ft Nonso Amadi & Bridge – “Freaky”

One of the main leaders of the new school and the experimental “Alte” movement of Nigerian music, Santi is back with a new track titled “Freaky”. He features Afro-R&B sensation, Nonso Amadi and Bridge of the former Nigerian boy band, L.O.S. This tracks takes a different approach from his recently released upbeat rap track “Icy” by staying dark from the production to the lyrics.

Produced by frequent Monster Boy Music collaborator, Genio Bambino, the smooth yet layered production samples a classic Nigerian tune, Shobedobedoo, by legendary rapper Ikechukwu. Bridge sings about a freaky, unfaithful woman on the chorus then Santi comes through in typical Santi fashion to remind us why we all are fascinated by his eclectic style and sound. In almost a rap-like verse, Nonso Amadi shows why he was at the top of our  of Artists Next to Blow in 2018 list with his verse. Amadi delivers a brilliant feature about a dangerous woman that he just cannot get enough of. We all have one of those in our lives, right? Or is it just me and Nonso? Listen for yourself below!

Ciara ft Tekno – “Freak Me”

Our breathy, soprano, hip hop princess is back at it again, this time with a colorful collaboration. Ciara and Nigerian Afrobeats artist Tekno give us coconut water splashed with lime, summer vibes with their new release “Freak Me”.

Enter Tekno at the refrain, instigating our love for this early-2000s royalty, “love the way you wine it, Coco. I like it when you get it down so loco”. Let’s hope that the music video doesn’t disappoint, nevertheless we can imagine that Tekno and Ciara may just have provided us the summer bop we didn’t know we needed.

Then again, can an argument be made that this song is this just another repetition of yet another American artist trying to get that sounds from the “Motherland” by featuring a Nigerian artist? Check out Ciara dancing to the song above, and the full track here.

Sidenote: The Creator of the Gwara Gwara, DJ Bongz, will be performing at OneAfrica Fest this weekend!

Chief Obi – “Kweku”

Why aren’t we talking about Chief Obi more? This “Kweku” track has the potential to be a major hit if pushed correctly. He’s proving more and more that his transition from comedy to music is not to be taken lightly. Shaku Shaku approved.

Davido – “Nwa Baby”

Ahh I was almost hoping for a 2018 revamp of Flavour’s Legendary Nwa Baby but in hindsight, that song should be untouched. Davido’s track however is about his love interest pulling off a heist for money and eventually ditching OBO to get locked up. He also briefly sings Akon’s hook on “Locked up“. Chioma wouldn’t have given him these problems. Any how, the video is creative and shows a more acting side to Davido, I hope this means an album is coming soon!

Tiwa Savage ft Duncan Mighty – “Lova Lova”

Duncan Mighty is a Legend! Honestly without him on this track, Tiwa Savage might have had another flop (argue with your fadda). Nevertheless “Lova Lova” is a jam and must be replayed this weekend.

Ceeza Milli, Wizkid & Mut4y – “Commando”

Speaking of another Legend who’s been killing features lately, Wizkid and the Starboy camp dropped the video for “Commando”. The video looks beautiful and…wait whats going on with Ceeza Milli’s hair?? On a side note, Wiz may have the best Shaku in the game.
