The Castle Lite Hip-hop Herstory concert took place this weekend at the Gallager Convention Center in Midrand, South Africa. Notable for its all female-rapper line up, the event was the first of it’s kind on the African continent.
The concert was hosted by the Breakfast Club‘s Angela Lee, Uganda’s Lee Kasumba and South Africa’s Loot Love. Headlining the show was the triple platinum “OOOUUU” hit maker, Young MA. A fellow American rapper who hails from Queens, New York, Roxanne Shante was also in the mix.
It was the first time Young MA had been to Africa. “We out here man. Mother f******* South Africa! I’m happy as a mother f*****! Y’all don’t even know,” she told the cheering crowd.
Additional performers at the historic concert consisted of South Africa female Hip-hop royalty like Nadia Nakai, “Mbongo Zaka” hit maker Rouge, Nomuzi “Moozlie” Mabena, Okzharp, Manthe Ribane, award-winning Fifi Cooper, Skwatta Camp’s Relo and Gigi Lamayne.
The show wasn’t only a concert but an overall celebration of women in Hip-hop and their immense contribution to the genre over the years.
It recognized the rappers who have been pushing their art and making their mark in this male dominated industry. It incorporated all aspects of Hip-hop, including fashion, graffiti, dancing and obviously rapping. It is great to see that Africa is progressing while finally giving women the recognition they deserve for their impact on Hip-hop.
