Five Things We Learned from Davido’s Hot 97 Interview

“People want me to fail because of my pops. But it’s not my fault.” Yesterday, Davido had a 30-minute interview with one of the hottest radio stations in America, Hot 97, hosted by DJ Ebro and Laura Stylez. From Ebro humming “So Mi So,” to Davido breaking down his lyrics to “Dami Duro,” this interview was as informative as it was entertaining. Davido’s conversation with Ebro was filled with gems, shoutouts, and a few takeaways that really showcased Davido the person and not the entertainer. In case you missed it, here are our five key takeaways:

  • A new Davido album is on the way.

Davido confirmed that he is putting the finishing touches on his new album. Outside of the EP that he dropped in 2016, the artist has yet to drop an album since his debut in 2012. He shot down rumors that Drake or Skepta would be on the tape but indicated that he sent music to G-Eazy.

  • Davido was charged a £300,000 fine prior to his performance.
Davido performance at O2 Arena

More likely than not, you’ve heard the news that Davido became the first Nigerian artist to sell out the O2 Arena in London. However, according to Davido, the venue was “half empty” by the time his original performance time came about. Allegedly, he was charged 50,000 pounds per 15 min extension just to allow the latecomers to make the show. To put this into perspective, his show was scheduled to start at 8 pm, yet he paid to postpone it to 9:30 pm, bringing the estimated cost to 300,000 pounds. Omo Lowo indeed.

  • DJ Ebro is informed on the current musical landscape in West Africa.

During the interview, DJ Ebro expressed his love for different West African artists and songs. Throughout the conversation, there was not an artist Davido mentioned that he was not already aware of. “So Mi So! That’s that joint I be playin.” There were even portions of the conversation where he started talking about the African child household and the difficulties that come with it. It’s definitely refreshing to see a non-African well positioned in the industry, who is so well versed in our culture.

  • Davido has a “big” Fall (remix) on the way

While discussing his upcoming album, he dropped news that a big “Fall” remix was on the way. Rumors have it that the features will include American rappers, Busta Rhymes and Prayah. This is something that has been in the works for some time now, as clips of the remix surfaced on the web years ago.

  • Lil Baby gifted Davido’s cook all his clothes after his Nigeria visit.

As Davido was explaining the positive energy that exists in Nigeria, he mentioned that Lil Baby gave all of his clothes to Davido’s personal cook prior to leaving the area. This goes to show the type of hospitality that was provided for him during his stay.

This interview displayed Davido’s willingness to be an ambassador for not just Nigeria, but for Africa as a whole–all while making hit records. With a new album on the way, Davido plans on bringing awareness to the Nigerian culture and its music scene, showcasing his true range as a pop star.
